Sonoran Hot Dogs: 4 Different Styles

A regional favorite, Sonoran Hot Dogs are grilled, wrapped in bacon and served on a bolillo-style hot dog bun and topped with pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, mayonnaise and mustard. There are over 200 purveyors in the Tucson area alone, each offering up their own particular take on the tasty treat. Using the ones we bought for dinner at Calle Tepa Mexican Street Grill as a template, we came up with our own versions of the delicious southwestern Sonoran dog dish.

 

The ̶F̶a̶r̶m̶e̶r̶ Blogger In The Dell

That would be the Shady Dell Vintage Trailer Court in Bisbee AZ, where you can relive the simpler days of RV travel in a restored trailer with themed furnishings. TSG spent the night in a 1957 Airfloat "Landyacht" decorated in retro-Vegas style, complete with a Sinatra album ready to go on the record player. We have to say it was a tough choice between the Airfloat and the 1947 Airporter Tiki Bus--we picked the Airfloat mainly because it had a full bathroom and DVD player with movies like The Day The Earth Stood Still, Invaders From Mars, and Them!

King Of The Wild Frontier

(aka Davy Crockett iconography you might see in Ozona, TX)

We don't have our copy of Bob Thompson's Born On a Mountaintop handy, so it's hard to say whether Davy actually visited Ozona during his time in Texas. Nevertheless, the good people of the area chose to honor Davy by naming their county after him in 1875. 

 

Last Spring Of The Spring Road Trip

San Solomon Spring in Reeves County Texas has an outflow of over 20 million gallons a day. It feeds the giant (1.75 acre) swimming pool of Balmorhea State Park. TSG visited the ginormous swimmin' hole on our first transcontinental road trip in 2002 and it's taken us 20 years to make it back. Sometimes revisiting places that hold good memories results in somewhat of a letdown, but such was not the case this morning. The place is as awesome as we remember.

In our journeys we have discovered that local museums, no matter what their scope, always have something unique--a hidden gem, if you will--that makes a visit worthwhile. The Crockett County Museum in Ozona TX is no exception.

Not Lovin' The Love Bugs

 It's love bug season in East Texas and anyone driving the two-lane blacktops knows it. The common march flies are out in their mating frenzy--veritable clouds of them spattering windshields and clogging radiators in their wake. Apparently the concentrated numbers on roadways is due to their attraction to  chemicals created when automobile exhaust fumes interact with heat and sunshine. 

 

It goes without saying that a car wash is the first thing on the agenda tomorrow morning.
