You Wanted More HOTR, You Got It (#2 In A Most Likely Continuing Series)

Here are a couple of clips of two more House On The Rock "rooms", the animatronic Circus Bandwagon and Orchestra and what HOTR bills as the "World's Largest Carousel". As impressive as these may be, they still only provide a tiny fraction of the HOTR experience.

HOTR Blows TSG's Mind

An article we read characterized The House on The Rock as "The granddaddy of all weird homes and kitschy American roadside attractions". Roadside America rates it as "The Best...a superstar attraction". After visiting the place, we'd have to say they're both right. In our career as a road-tripper we have never experienced anything like it.  It's truly something you have to experience for yourself. But be forewarned: sensory overload is a given, and after a couple of hours you'll be wondering, "just how much stuff can one guy accumulate, and do I have the stamina to actually see it all?"

So, here's a few pics of the "Nautical Room" a three-story pretty much life-sized depiction of a giant squid doing battle with a whale--with walkways around the scene full of display cases of scale models of ships and sailing ephemera. This is just ONE "room" of several of this scale and scope of the multiple "collections" to be found in the house. As our title says, it's truly mind-blowing, and one post is simply  not enough to do the place justice...stay tuned for more.

Grand Rapids Has A Blackbird Problem...

...so much so that warnings of possible attacks are prominently posted in public areas. A word to the wise should be sufficient to prevent a nasty pecking incident. Be bird aware and don't end up like Suzanne Pleshette!

Not My Father's Oldsmobile

Growing up in San Diego we had boring cars--an old Buick and a later a newer Rambler. But...just a few houses away, our friend Chris...his dad had a '66 Toronado, quite possibly the coolest car around at the time. Ever since then, the "Toro" has topped our list of favorite cars. However, in our auto museum-going career it has been conspicuously absent from the collections. Today we broke our non-Toronado streak at the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum in Lansing MI. The '66 was tough to get good photos of, but they had a slightly less cool 1970 version on display and a factory mock-up model as well. So all in all it was a good day for this Toronado aficionado.
