Dedicated to Lefty Mudersbach

A visit to "Big Daddy" Don Garlits' drag racing museum, which somewhat disappointingly doesn't have any Lefty Mudersbach memorabilia. For those not up on their top-fuel drag racing history, Lefty was a contemporary of Garlits who dominated the SoCal strips in the early 60s. His other claim to fame, of course, is his "cameo" appearance on one of Stevie Guitar Miller's signature tunes.

At first I thought, "4 minutes plus to show some dragster stuff? How can that be?" And then, yep, 4 minutes came and went and the dragster stuff just kept on a coming.

What came to mind was, remember my LP featuring Craig Breedlove's 400+ mph jet car on the salt flats? Like 18 minutes of what sounded like an engine warming up, and then, at the end, a few seconds of the vehicle just screaming away. A preposterous recording. But, hey, it seems like the dragster offerings just went on and on, so maybe a future posting could feature Craig doing his jet car thing as the soundtrack to more dragster offerings.

When I lived in Salinas, one of my classmates (Jamie something) had a big brother who owned and raced a dragster at the local track. I remember going to the track a couple of times to watch him race.

The autos featured in the slideshow only comprise about half of the collection at the Garlits Museum. There are at least as many non-dragster classic antique vehicles in another building. The most interesting item on display wasn't an automobile but a Chrysler Air-Raid Siren, one of a hundred or so rooftop nuclear attack early warning sirens purchased by the US government in the early 50s. According to the wiki article, the siren put out 138 decibels and could be heard 25 miles away.
