"Notorious Natasha" cracked me up.

I've always wondered, do the armed forces retain artists to cook up a logo for each plane? If so, do they decide on the logo by consulting the crew (at that moment), or is it just assigned? And if not the above, then, what? Each crew happens to have a relatively skilled artist on board? There are logistics behind these works, and so, what's the story?

Reader's digest version from wikipedia: in WWII at least, the work was done by professional civilian artists as well as talented amateur servicemen. A quick search turns up several books on the subject, I wonder if they might be available from the library. I've got a bunch of other examples in the archives from visits to other aviation museums...a good idea for a future post when I'm stuck for ideas.
