The Tehachapi Loop, a spiral track section engineered to facilitate travel up a steep grade, is famous to trainspotters throughout the west. As luck would have it TSG arrived at the overlook spot just before a train passed through. Pretty cool. Just on the other side of the divide, The Tehachapi Depot Museum in town has a nice collection of historical images and a diorama of the loop on display. Also pictured is a model re-creation from the San Diego RR museum.

Yeah, it can be amazing the lengths folks went to when avoiding undue grades for trains.
The word "tehachapi" intrigued me, seeming to be a word of native American origin. According to a quick google peek, "One possibility for the origin of the name Tehachapi comes from the Kawaiisu language. It may be derived from the word for "hard climb" or tihachipia.
Useful word, for sure.
