Cool pic. Rocks and roots are often a good subject just cuz they often look so weird in juxtaposition. The stream/creek/river in the background is an excellent element in the composition, by the way.
One thing I didn't capture from this scene (and I'm kind of kicking myself because it was pretty cool) was the almost deafening chorus of cicadas going off in the canyon. The weird thing was they would go silent every so often and then start up again just as loud after a few moments. Wonder what might have been the trigger for the whole bunch of them to shut up all at once.

Perhaps they were simply concluding one song/poem/whatever and then, following a "1-2-3-4" they only they could perceive, they began another.
