In the interest of comic (and musical) accuracy, we feel that Joe Cool should really be piloting a doghouse.

Agreed. Furthermore, if he were to be aboard an actual non-doghouse flying machine, it certainly shouldn't be a red tri-plane . . . .

Interestingly, the plane behind the Fokker Dr.1 is not a Sopwith Camel (the model flown against von Richthofen in his final flight) but a Sopwith Pup, which is the kind you'd expect to be piloted by a beagle.
