Huh. Well, that surely warranted a stop-n-click. Many clicks, in fact.

So, is that like when someone grafts one treeish thing onto another? Like, the cactus is planted in, and growing in, the decomposing tree stump? Or is it something more peculiar and biologically troublesome?

I'm guessing someone planted the cactus in the stump and it's gaining nutrition of some sort from decaying tree matter. Or maybe there's a symbiotic fungus thing going on inside the stump? It's been there for many (five?) years and grown quite a bit since I first saw it. Once a prickly pear takes root it's pretty much like a weed--if someone had planted in the ground there would likely be a big hedge by now.

Of note is crop being farmed in the background--brussels sprouts. Although I've come to tolerate them when roasted or pan fried and slightly carmelized with bacon, they don't smell good to me at all when they're on the vine, so to speak.
