Baby Manti (Mantises?) In The 'Hood

All signs point to a recent Praying Mantis hatch in our vicinity. Cute little buggers...although not so cute if you're a littler bug than they are.

Cool little beasties.

Might be a natural brood, or some gardener might have purchased a box full and let 'em loose in their backyard or patio garden.

We had a family friend who befriended a mantis during one season. The thing especially liked to hang out in the guy's beard. Pretty funny to see. Like, a down on his luck pirate who couldn't afford a parrot.

I bought a mantis egg sac from a nursery when I lived in San Diego. It was pretty amazing when it hatched and hundreds of those tiny guys swarmed out. They dispersed pretty quickly and poof! they were gone within a week. Most probably got eaten by birds or their fellow baby manti. Every once in awhile I'd see one in the foliage or the screen door and I'd wonder if it was one of my brood.

Hmmm..I'm not so sure that being a Papa Mantis is a good thing, considering the Momma Mantis' legendary post-coital feeding habits.
