 On the itinerary today, a visit to the very cool USS Cairo in the Vicksburg National Military Park

Huh. I'm a bit puzzled. The wood looks quite newish. Is this a rebuilt version using metal from the original that sank? Or is this something that was in the process of being built when the Civil War ended, and so it was never finished? Or, what?

So, sunk and reasonably well preserved in an oxygen free pile of sand and muck.
