The problem with trying to take pictures of chuckwallas is they are extremely skittish. Get a little too close or make any sudden movements and they will retreat into a rock crevice and you'll be lucky to even get a shot of their tail as illustrated here.

Time for a crazy big zoom lens and lots of patience if you want the shot for the cover of the National Geographic.
National Geo cover-worthy photo or not, I consider any day I get to see a chuckwalla a good one.
