We're Lichen This

Returning to Fall Creek on our fungus-finding followup expedition, TSG encountered this curious display of California's State Lichen, the Lace lichen (Ramalina menziesii). Some industrious hiker had taken the time to gather up a mound of the stuff for others to enjoy or puzzle over. To our eye it could be a pie or perhaps an eco-toupee or maybe even a mossy Davy Crockett-esque faux coonskin cap.

Funny you should say so, since the Bigfoot Discovery Center is less than two miles away as the crow flies. Perhaps I should forward the image to them and see what they have to say about it.
