Vaseline and Uranium Glass

There are many things that I want to know about this subject, but first and foremost, why the heck would someone combine Vaseline with uranium in the first place? Was it simply a practical joke, like the old Vaseline-on-the-toilet-seat gag? The target of the joke is supposed to grab some uranium and then drop it as it slips out of their hands?

I think the vaseline moniker has to do with the glass looking as if it has been smeared with a layer of petroleum jelly.
