Wiki excerpt: The San Francisco Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia) is a slender multi-colored subspecies of the common garter snake, designated as an endangered subspecies since the year 1967. Some researchers estimate that there are only 1,000 to 2,000 adult snakes remaining. This garter snake prefers wet and marshy areas, and because of its elusive nature, it is difficult to see or capture.

That's fantastic! I read up on the Wiki article, and their picture is OK, but frankly your picture tells a more compelling story; one that reflects the text! Would you consider getting your picture on-line with Wikipedia so that others might benefit from your keen camera eye?
Thanks for the compliment, but to my keen camera eye the pic is a bit out of focus, and I'm sure it would be much more evident if posted in a larger size on wiki.
And although the snake is "rare", I've seen several of them in my wanderings around Point Reyes. Most of my sightings have been seeing the last third of the body slipping into the foliage at the edge of the trail.
