M'Kulu and Ken Ernest

From the Grasshopper Archives
Columbia Wholesale Supply "Giant Post Card" #J-541

From 1907 until 1953, the California Alligator Farm sat across from Los Angeles' Lincoln Park. It moved to Buena Park and reopened in 1955. Some time later, the young Grasshopper experienced the farm's reptilian wonders, including M'Kulu, then the largest Nile Crocodile in captivity.

M'kulu and Ken headed east when the Buena Park location closed down. The Croc migrated to "Jumbolair", the ranch/zoo/airport of Nautilis Fitness magnate, Arthur Jones.

Ken went on to work at the Black Hills Reptile Garden...not far from Dinosaur Park in Rapid City. He was recently written up in an OC Register article entitled When Alligators Roamed Orange County.

Another Rock Blog: Jeff Beck @ The Fox

Man, what an amazing show at the grand old Fox Theater! The line going around the corner reminded me of ye olden days. I said as much to the couple next to me, and the guy says, "Yeah, but at Winterland, we got in line at noon, man!" From that moment on, I knew it was going to be a good night.

Davy Knowles opened up with a well-received acoustic set. He talked about living his dream, opening for Jeff on the US tour. (Not to mention dropping every guitar god's name from Frampton to Townshend to Gallagher to the the bluesmen of Chicago and Mississippi). Good for him, I hope he goes far!

And then, the man of the hour (or two in our case). El Becko, The Guv'nor, the guitarist's guitarist, Jeff Beck. My sixth time; and I still want more. The most fun part of the show: as the rest of the band was still coming on stage for the encore, Jeff fired off a sparkling, twangy version of the theme from "The Beverly Hillbillies"!!!

Oooohhhhh, Black Diamond

Black Diamond Mines, that is.

As seen on California's Gold and Bay Area Backroads.

Not shown on those shows, though: The Red-eyed Devil.

(No relation to the White Witch*)
