It may not surprise you to figure that I thoroughly enjoyed this posting (perhaps the engineer/patent attorney core in me is simply showing itself). Old V cleaners can be quite cool. One thing that seemed apparent to me, which I hadn't thought about before, is how many vacuum cleaner designs (at least from a few decades ago) really seemed to reflect and riff on the more extreme automotive designs of the day.
I was afforded sort of special permission to see that particular vacuum cleaner collection--it is normally off limits to visitors with children in their party. When I paid my entrance fee, the docent told me there was a "secret" elevator in the back that went up to the 3rd floor. I had it all to myself but unfortunately it was kind of late in the day I was unable to spend more time there.
