So. Most of those places to stay, I wouldn't stay at without thinking about it three or four times. At least. And most of those places to eat? I'll willing go eat at with barely a first thought.
One of the great frustrations on the road is seeing so many tempting eating establishments and not having the time/money/room in my stomach to sample their wares. Taking photos of their signage is a poor substitute but it does provide fodder for the occasional blog post. As you noted, old/rundown/defunct hotel signs don't stir any urge to do much more than snap a pic and seek more pleasant lodgings somewhere down the road.
